There is nothing quite as sad than seeing someone suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. It isn’t just a terminal illness that deprives the sufferer of their life, it also gradually deteriorates their thoughts and memories. Recently, famous sufferers like the former President Ronald Reagan and actor Charlton Heston have brought a little attention to the situation, but family members of sufferers have known about the devastating effects of this disease. I lost an aunt to this terrible condition. She went from a lively woman who loved her independence and playing cards to being bed-ridden and dependent on others to take care of her most basic needs.
Luckily, there is something concerned citizens can do to help promote research, support, and help to sufferers and family members afflicted by Alzheimer’s Disease, and it’s the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk. Since 1989, volunteers have been giving their time and walking all over America to raise awareness and funds for this great cause. Over $200 million has been raised so far! Simply type in your ZIP code and find a walk near you! I have three walks within 50 miles of where I am, so it will be easy to jump on board and lend a hand. What’s really needed are Team Captains who will be in charge of organizing a group of walkers. Don’t hesitate to sign up, as you will need some time to get everything straight! No matter where you are in America, there will be an Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk event near you. This is the perfect opportunity to raise money for a great cause and raise awareness about a terrible disease!
